Costa Rica Honors Study Abroad
While preparing for this week study abroad course through the honors college, I met with my group in sessions where we discussed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their relevance in Costa Rica. Among other initiatives while abroad, I helped research, build, translate, write, and paint wooden signs for a national park to educate tourists on the importance of local flora. We lived in a more remote area with a local community that shared their culture with us, and I was able to make meaningful connections while practicing my Spanish. We also created educational posters in order to convey the knowledge gained to our peers.

As part of this program, we were required to write a book report on 'The Ticos' before traveling in order to gain proper historical and cultural context for Costa Rica. This assignment allowed me to develop my analytical skills as well as allow me to approach my interactions with a greater holistic appreciation.

Reflection
Through this experience, I learned the importance of each and every working part of an ecosystem. I also learned how to intake large amounts of information and then reiterate it concisely, a skill I will continue to apply in my future endeavors into the medical field. In addition, I have gained a new understanding for a culture different from my own. Costa Rica's mantra of 'Pura Vida', aka 'Pure Life' which highlights the importance of living in the moment and enjoying life to the fullest, is a philosophy I will carry with me forever.
